Qurbani (also called Udhiyah) is the act of sacrificing a livestock animal during the days of Eid al-Adha (10th–13th of Dhul Hijjah). It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah's sake.
Eligible animals
- Sheep / Goat: 1 share = 1 person
- Cow / Buffalo: 7 shares (split among up to 7 people)
- Camel: 7 shares
- Animal must be healthy, of the right age (sheep ≥6m, goat ≥1y, cow ≥2y, camel ≥5y)
Distribution (mustahabb)
- 1/3 for your own family
- 1/3 for relatives, neighbours, friends
- 1/3 for the poor and needy
- Sacrifice must be done after Eid prayer on Eid day

Who should perform Qurbani?
Qurbani is wajib (obligatory in the Hanafi school) on every Muslim adult who owns wealth above the Zakat nisab on the days of Eid al-Adha. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools consider it a strongly recommended sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah). Either way, every able family is encouraged to perform it.
How many shares can a cow, camel or buffalo be split into?
A cow, buffalo or camel can be split into seven shares — meaning up to seven people can participate in one animal. Each person's intention must be sincerely for Qurbani (not just for meat). A sheep or goat is one share — one whole animal per person.
When is the Qurbani performed?
Qurbani is performed on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah, after the Eid prayer on the 10th. Sacrificing before the Eid prayer doesn't count — the animal would just be regular meat, and another sacrifice would be needed.
How should the meat be distributed?
It's recommended (mustahabb) to divide the meat into thirds: one third for your family, one third for relatives and friends, and one third for the poor and needy. You can keep more or less depending on need — the spirit is sharing.
Can I do Qurbani in another country (e.g. through a charity)?
Yes — many Muslims pay charities like Islamic Relief, HHRD, Penny Appeal etc. to perform their Qurbani in countries where the meat is more needed. This is widely accepted, but make sure the charity is reputable and follows correct Islamic procedure.
What animals are eligible?
Sheep and goats must be at least 1 year old (sheep can be 6+ months if it looks like 1 year). Cows and buffalo at least 2 years. Camels at least 5 years. The animal must be healthy, free of major defects (no blindness, severe lameness, missing more than half horn/ear/teeth, etc.).
Do I need to perform Qurbani for each family member?
The majority view (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) is one Qurbani per household covers everyone. The Hanafi view requires Qurbani from each adult Muslim with wealth above nisab. Follow the position your local scholar advises.
Can I sell or give away the skin?
Selling the skin for personal profit is not allowed. The skin can be used by the family, given to charity, or donated to charitable institutions. Many Muslims donate it directly to mosques or madrasas.
